Connecting with Indigenous Community Members

November 18, 2024

The Enhance Energy Team is committed to fostering genuine relationships with Indigenous communities by spending time in community and listening to their needs and interests.

The Maskwacis Employment Center (MEC) was created in partnership with the Ermineskin Cree Nation, Louis Bull Tribe, Montana First Nation, and the Samson Cree Nation, along with provincial and federal government agencies in 2008. Since that time, they’ve had a powerful mission to assist and promote the independence if their clients to prepare, obtain, and maintain employment through client-based services and collaborative partners.

One of their community-focused events is their Fall Career Fair, taking place in October, and connecting community members with industry collaborators. This year there were over 80 vendors spanning across industry, post-secondary and career services for the communities in Maskwacis. The Enhance Energy Team was grateful to be able to be one such collaborator through sponsorship and participation at the career fair.

The event kicked off with a cultural showcase of traditional dancing, drumming and an Elder’s teaching, sharing the uniqueness of Cree culture and spirituality. From there, the Enhance team was able to connect with community members to talk about the opportunities in Alberta’s growing CCUS industry.

“It’s always a good thing to be in community, listening and learning about the culture, language and beliefs that are specific to the Maskwacis Nations,” says Gillian Hynes, Director of People and Culture at Enhance Energy. “We strive to focus on fostering connections between the Enhance Team and Indigenous communities, and the best way to do this is to BE in community.”

Enhance Energy is a proud supporter of MEC events in 2024 and looks forward to the continuing collaboration in 2025. Learn more about MEC’s powerful mission and the ways that you can support them: https://www.maskwacisemployment.ca/
